LIGHTING THE DARK shows you how to use hard and soft light to create ARTISTIC images. Soft light from umbrellas and hard light from dish reflectors and other sources. The pictures are shot on colour with a digital camera and then you are shown how traditional darkroom skills can be brought up to date for the digital age.

PICTURES THAT TELL A STORY

A standard studio background canvas and some soft light can be just the start to creating something quite dramatic if you know what to do. Lighting with soft light doesn't seem right when you are looking for a strong finished image, yet if you get the exposure right at this stage then everything you need is there. You just need a creative mind and the knowledge to make it all happen. On this Mini Movie you will see on screen, exactly how this dramatic almost GOTHIC image was lit and how it was created.

HARD EDGED SHADOWS

Hard light creates deep shadows. But as long as you know how to control them then this lighting technique can give you some of the best pictures you have ever taken. On the second part of the Mini Movie you are shown what it takes to light in unusual ways. This kind of light is not normally associated with glamour images, yet can give you much more punch that you can imagine. You are shown the skill of how to place light against dark and back again.
